Expanding the Carbon Market to Stimulate New Opportunities for Alternative Fuels

Lee 2024-09-14

On September 7th, 2024, the Global Energy Transition Conference opened in Beijing. At the meeting, Minister of Ecology and Environment Huang Runqiu stated that the national carbon emission trading market is about to undergo significant expansion, and key emission industries such as steel, cement, and aluminum smelting will be included by the end of this year.

Subsequently, on September 9th, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment officially released the "Work Plan for the National Carbon Emission Trading Market to Cover the Cement, Steel, and Electrolytic Aluminum Industries (Draft for Comments)", clarifying the specific timetable and roadmap for including these three high energy consuming industries in the national carbon emission trading market from 2024 onwards. This move not only marks a crucial step forward in the construction of China's carbon market, but also indicates that these industries will usher in a profound green revolution.

Work Plan for the National Carbon Emission Trading Market to Cover the Cement, Steel, and Electrolytic Aluminum Industries (Draft for Comments)

  • The cement industry: needs to accelerate technological innovation, promote green transformation of production processes, and reduce carbon emissions through optimizing production processes, improving energy efficiency, and introducing low-carbon technologies.
  • The steel industry: should attach importance to optimizing and adjusting the energy structure, improving the level of resource recycling and utilization, and actively exploring clean energy alternatives to reduce the carbon emission intensity in the production process.
  • Electrolytic aluminum industry: As a major consumer of electricity, it is necessary to focus on improving energy efficiency, optimizing the power structure, and actively seeking low-carbon power sources to reduce environmental pressure.

Since the official launch of the national carbon emission trading market in July 2021, the market has successfully completed two performance cycles, with a cumulative trading volume of about 440 million tons and a turnover of about 24.9 billion yuan, covering an annual carbon dioxide emissions of about 5.1 billion tons, becoming the world's largest carbon market in terms of greenhouse gas emissions. This significant achievement not only demonstrates the effectiveness of China's carbon market construction, but also provides broad space for the development of green emission reduction technologies such as alternative fuels.

With the expansion of the carbon market, alternative fuel technologies have ushered in another development opportunity. Through advanced processes such as crushing, sorting, and forming, waste materials such as household waste, industrial waste, and biomass can be converted into green fuels required by industries such as cement, steel, and electrolytic aluminum, thereby accelerating the green transformation process of these industries.

This is an alternative fuel preparation production line tailored by GEP for an industrial waste disposal enterprise in Zhejiang. The two-stage crushing system using double-shaft shredder and single rotor shredder, combined with magnetic separation, packaging, and forming technology, converts industrial waste into two high-quality green fuels: SRF bulk material and RDF formed material. This not only solves the problem of garbage disposal, but also opens up new profit channels for enterprises.

This is a solution designed by GEP for a company specializing in alternative fuels for household waste. Deep purification of materials is achieved through processes such as crushing, magnetic separation, screening, and air separation. Subsequently, fine shredding was carried out using a fine shredder, and RDF fuel was produced through a molding process, achieving a magnificent transformation of household waste from a "burden" to a "resource". For the stale household waste in landfills, GEP also has mature alternative fuel preparation technology, further expanding the boundaries of resource recycling.

With the release of the "Action Plan for Low Carbon Transformation and Construction of Coal and Electricity (2024-2027)", biomass co firing has become a hot topic in the industry, and GEP's biomass alternative fuel preparation process has also received attention, providing strong support for the industry's green transformation and sustainable development.
