Can Shredded Sugarcane Leaves Be Fed Directly into a Boiler?

Sugarcane leaves are a common agricultural residue generated by the sugar industry. With proper preparation, they can be used as biomass boiler fuel, helping recover energy from agricultural waste.

But can shredded sugarcane leaves be fed directly into a boiler furnace without being pelletized or compressed into briquettes?

Yes, provided that the boiler is designed to handle loose biomass and the shredded material meets its fuel specifications. The appropriate particle size, moisture content, conveying system, and feeding method all need to be considered when designing a sugarcane leaf shredding solution.

What Size Should Sugarcane Leaves Be for Boiler Fuel?

For some biomass combustion systems, such as grate-fired boilers, shredded sugarcane leaves may be processed to a particle size of approximately 20–50 mm. This range is an example rather than a universal standard.

Suitable particle size depends on the boiler type, combustion technology, and fuel feeding system. Some boilers can accommodate relatively coarse biomass, while others require finer and more uniform material.

In addition to particle size, several fuel characteristics should be considered:

  • Moisture content: Excessive moisture can affect combustion performance and reduce the useful energy available from the fuel.
  • Bulk density and flowability: Loose sugarcane leaves can be lightweight and irregular, which may affect storage, conveying, and feeding.
  • Ash content and calorific value: These properties influence fuel suitability and boiler operating conditions.
  • Feeding requirements: The fuel must be compatible with the boiler's feeding equipment and combustion system.

The final output size should therefore be determined by the boiler manufacturer's fuel specifications and verified under actual operating conditions.

If a smaller and more uniform particle size is required, secondary shredding and screening can be considered.

Sugarcane Leaf Shredding Solutions for Boiler Fuel Preparation

GEP ECOTECH provides biomass size-reduction equipment and customized processing solutions based on material characteristics, processing capacity, feed size, and boiler fuel requirements.

Depending on the required output size and the condition of the raw material, a sugarcane leaf processing line may use one of the following configurations.

Option 1: Single-Stage Shredding

Process flow: Sugarcane Leaves → Biomass Shredder → Approximately 50 mm Output → Conveyor → Feeding System → Boiler

This configuration may be suitable when the boiler can accommodate relatively coarse, loose biomass fuel. A single shredding stage can simplify the process and reduce the number of machines required.

The actual output size and capacity depend on the equipment configuration and the characteristics of the feed material.

Option 2: Primary Shredding + Secondary Shredding

Process flow: Sugarcane Leaves → Biomass Shredder → Conveyor → Hammer Mill → Approximately 30–50 mm Output → Conveyor → Feeding System → Boiler

This configuration can be considered when primary shredding alone does not achieve the required particle size or size consistency.

The biomass shredder performs the initial size reduction, while the ring hammer mill provides further shredding. The final particle size must be verified through material testing and appropriate equipment configuration.

Option 3: Multi-Stage Size Reduction for Finer Fuel

Process flow: Sugarcane Leaves → Biomass Shredder → Conveyor → Hammer Mill → High-Speed Hammer Mill → Approximately 10 mm Output → Conveyor → Feeding System → Boiler

This configuration may be considered for applications requiring finer biomass fuel. However, a multi-stage system is not necessary for every boiler.

Achieving an output size of approximately 10 mm depends on the equipment models, screen configuration, material moisture content, and other operating conditions. The required particle size should first be confirmed with the boiler manufacturer.

GEP ECOTECH Case Reference

GEP ECOTECH has supplied biomass shredding and processing systems for agricultural residue applications in multiple regions. In a recent project in Southeast Asia, a biomass shredding line was configured to process sugarcane leaves and other agricultural residues for boiler fuel preparation. The system included a primary shredder, conveying equipment, and a feeding system designed to match the boiler's fuel specifications. The project was commissioned with a processing capacity in the range of several tons per hour, and the output material was successfully used as boiler fuel, reducing reliance on conventional fossil fuels.
