Unlocking the Pretreatment Problem of Coal-Fired Units Coupled with Biomass Direct Combustion Power Generation

Lee 2024-09-22

The coupling of biomass direct combustion power generation technology with coal-fired units is an innovative energy utilization method aimed at achieving efficient utilization of biomass fuel and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by co firing some biomass raw materials in coal-fired boilers. Compared to independent biomass power plants, coal-fired units coupled with biomass direct combustion power generation have the advantages of low investment costs (less than 1/5 of the unit kilowatt cost), high fuel utilization efficiency (30% -50% higher efficiency), low operation and maintenance costs (about 1/10), and good economies of scale. Compared with other renewable energy sources, it has the advantages of short construction period and low renovation cost.

From the perspective of fuel sources, biomass power generation mainly relies on agricultural and forestry waste such as straw, rice husk, tree branches, etc. These materials absorb a large amount of carbon dioxide during their growth process. After burning and releasing energy, from the perspective of the entire life cycle, their carbon footprint can be approximated as zero carbon emissions, which helps alleviate climate change problems.

At the construction and implementation level, this technology can fully utilize the existing coal-fired power plant site, power production and grid connection facilities, personnel and other resources. With only moderate modifications to the feeding system, biomass fuel can be crushed, transported and coupled with coal powder for combustion. This "plug and play" transformation method greatly reduces the difficulty and cost of project implementation.

Although there have been many successful cases of coupling coal-fired units with biomass direct combustion power generation, there are still some challenges, such as the problem of crushing and pretreatment of biomass fuel. In response to this difficulty, the biomass shredder developed by GEP provides an effective solution.

  1. The ultra large capacity crushing space, designed with high fluidity as the principle, can easily accommodate more feed and ensure unobstructed operation;
  2. The optimized cutting tool significantly improves cutting force and crushing efficiency;
  3. The wrap around anti winding fixed blade structure cleverly prevents soft material entanglement problems such as rope bundling, ensuring smooth and unobstructed operation;
  4. The GI intelligent monitoring system can monitor current, oil pressure, temperature, etc. in real time, intelligently analyze possible faults, issue warning signals in advance, effectively reduce the risk of unplanned downtime, and ensure production continuity;
  5. High quality materials are selected for core components such as the tool box, spindle, and cutting tools to adapt to high-intensity continuous work and ensure stable operation of the equipment.

Looking ahead to the future, with the deepening implementation of the "Action Plan for Low Carbon Transformation of Coal fired Power Plants (2024-2027)", the coupling of coal-fired units with biomass direct combustion power generation will usher in a period of rapid development, driven by technological innovation and policy support to move towards green and low-carbon transformation.
