Recycling RDF from Waste for Cement Plants

Harris 2021-06-21

Alternative fuel RDF (Refuse Derived Fuel) refers to solid secondary substances that are produced from waste and serve as a fuel in some types of production. Typically RDF is used as a supplemental or primary fuel in plants that operate smelting or reheating furnaces at high temperatures.

The incineration of RDF in such kilns is much safer than using plain MSW, as cement plant heating kilns typically operate at temperatures of 1600 ° C or more. In such conditions, the overwhelming majority of harmful substances and impurities are destroyed before they are released into the atmosphere.

How Refuse Derived Fuel is made

When recycling and sorting waste, valuable recyclable materials are often selected, which can be used in the future to make products, the alternative fuel can be taken from these valuable materials. The following types of high-energy waste are used for the production of RDF:

  • plastic
  • paper and cardboard
  • textile
  • leather and rubber
  • polymers and synthetics
  • wood

the metals, stones, glass and chlorine-containing materials are not used for the production of RDF.

Feasibility of using RDF in Cement Plants

The procedure for the manufacture of cement is associated with high energy costs, since during production, heating furnaces operate at a level of 1700 ° C - 2000 ° C and above. If we take the average indicators, then for one ton of finished cement the enterprise will need from 60 to 130 kg of fuel oil or its alternative in the form of natural gas, as well as about 100-110 kWh of electricity. The total energy and fuel costs for cement production account for almost half of all production costs.

If you use RDF as a fuel, then the cost of cement production will decrease significantly, profitability will increase, and the quality of products will remain the same.
